Das Haus formerly known as Marstall invited our students to develop speculative proposals for the historic Marstall building in Roßla, situated in Landkreis Mansfeld-Südharz, the most rapidly ageing district in Germany. Developed in collaboration with InnoHub Roßla and SEG Mansfeld-Südharz, the project unfolded against a charged backdrop: a site visit to the Harz region exposed students to both the architectural complexity of the Marstall and the distressed condition of surrounding forests — a landscape shaped by climate-related damage that followed the group all the way up to the Brocken and into Walpurgis Night.
Across 17 entries, students tackled questions of hybrid use, heritage protection, urban reorganisation, and circular fabrication — with the ambition of transforming the Marstall into a future hub for timber innovation, bringing mystery, material knowledge, and spatial imagination to one of Germany's most structurally challenged regions. We especially thank our partners at InnoHub Roßla and SEG Mansfeld-Südharz to award prizes for the strongest entries to our students.
