LogDesignBuild Suhl
Collaborative Design Research Seminar
2023 – 2024
The project LogDesignBuild Suhl brought together students from SPENI at Fachhochschule Erfurt and emtad at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to explore the design and fabrication potential of crooked timber and thinnings from regional Thuringian woodlands. Spanning the full chain from harvesting through structural simulation, digital fabrication, and AR-assisted assembly, the workshop traced an expanded understanding of what it means to build with local, imperfect material.
The winning project — a hyper grid shell of roughly 6×6m, built from pine cross-sections of 8–15cm diameter sourced from the local forest — was realized on site in Suhl-Nord, a post-industrial conversion area on the edge of the city. The structure served as both a design proposition and a spatial impulse for the broader transformation of the neighbourhood.
The collaboration was developed within the eTeach framework Kollaborative Impulsprojekte.
