Toolbox – Iterations

Design Basics Seminar Series
2024 –

Iterations is an in-depth introduction to the foundations of design practice, situated between gestural technique, analogue experimentation, and digital production. Building heavily on methods of Stegreif exercises as an experimental warm-up and problem-specific formats, the seminar approaches design as a form of processual research.

Students begin with a seemingly random object of their choosing — extended through a functional intervention — serves as the starting point. Its physical materialisation becomes the basis for a sequence of technical and technological operations: from modelling and mould-making, 3D scanning and milling paths, through to relief printing. Throughout, materials and tools are explored as active partners in the design process rather than passive instruments.

The aim is to reflect on the interplay between hand, material, and machine — and to develop iterative strategies that mediate between experiment, precision, and intuition.
